Intec Gaming Announces Time Breaker Light Gun for Retro Games on Modern TVs
Intec Gaming (different from the old peripheral manufacturer, Intec, from the 90s/2000s) has just recently announced the upcoming release of a new light gun that works for the PS1 and PS2 consoles, but also works on modern HDTVs, adding an interesting new way to play your favorite games from the old consoles.
The guns will operate completely wirelessly, by using a receiver that’s plugged into the console, and it works for up to 85” screens. While we’re not 100% sure how the video processing works yet, it looks like it also comes with an HDMI converter that’s used when playing on modern TVs or monitors. It uses USB for the receivers on PS2 and a PlayStation controller port dongle on the PS1, plus an infrared box that goes above the monitor as a sensor (which also uses USB power.)
There’s also optional built-in sound effects that play out of the gun itself when the trigger is pulled, as well as options for rapid fire and a rechargeable battery.
The marketing on the website also states it’s compatible with titles like House of the Dead, but since no game from that series was ever released on PS1 or PS2, this might just be a mistake. However, the website also does mention that they’re looking into making the gun compatible with other consoles as well, including the NES, SNES, Xbox, Saturn, and Dreamcast. It’s unclear whether they’ll need to release different guns for each console or if the technology can be adapted by using different receivers with the same gun.
I’m pretty excited about the prospect of having a new way to play the classic games on modern displays with a low-latency wireless option, and I’m curious to learn more about some of the other details of how it works. We should be getting hands-on with the guns and a lot more info in just a few weeks at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, so we’ll have a lot more updates on this gun in the near future, but for now, you can check out the official website to see it in action.
Stay tuned for more info!
